Vancouver Island Wedding Budget Guide: What Things Actually Cost

Weddings on Vancouver Island range from about $25,000 to $35,000 for around 100 guests. Victoria is the most expensive market. Nanaimo, the Comox Valley, and smaller communities come in noticeably lower.

This guide covers local pricing by region, a category-by-category budget breakdown, and ways to cut costs. For a look at how the Island compares to the rest of the country, see our average wedding cost in Canada page.

What Weddings Cost by Region

Victoria is the priciest on the Island. Heritage venues, higher demand, and an established vendor pool all push prices up. Downtown and waterfront locations cost the most.

Nanaimo and the Mid-Island are more affordable with good vendor options. A lot of couples end up here for that reason.

Tofino and Ucluelet price more like a destination wedding, especially in summer. Limited vendors and remote logistics add to the bill. Our Tofino wedding vendors guide has the local favourites.

Comox Valley and Campbell River have mountain and ocean backdrops at lower prices. The vendor scene up here has grown a lot in the last few years.

Sooke and Ladysmith are still under the radar. Good venues, lower demand, and room to negotiate.

Budget Breakdown

Venue: 30 to 40% Community halls and parks start around $2,000. Private farm and estate venues run $8,000 to $15,000+. Make sure you know the right questions to ask before signing. Browse Vancouver Island venues here.

Food and drinks: 20 to 30% $50 to $150 per guest depending on the format. Food trucks, family-style dinners, and farm-to-table catering are all common on the Island. For drinks, hiring a bartender and getting a special event permit is usually cheaper than a full open bar. More in our catering guide.

Photography and videography: 10 to 15% Packages start around $2,500 on the Island. A Nanaimo or Comox-based photographer will usually cost less than one based in Victoria. Full photographer pricing breakdown for BC here.

Attire: 5 to 10% Wedding dresses in Canada average $1,500 to $3,500, plus $300 to $800 for alterations. Victoria and Nanaimo both have consignment shops and sample sales.

Flowers and decor: 5 to 10% Seasonal local blooms, potted plants, driftwood, and foraged greenery all cost less than imported flowers and look right at home on the Island. Our floral guide covers local options, and the DIY decor checklist is there if you want to handle it yourself.

Entertainment: 5 to 8% DJs run $800 to $1,500. Live bands start around $2,000. Local musicians from the Victoria Conservatory of Music are another option.

Everything else: 10 to 15% Rings, hair and makeup, stationery, officiant, transportation, favours, tips, insurance and permits. Budget for these early so they don't sneak up on you.

Ways to Save

Pick an off-season or mid-week date. Many Island venues discount 20% to 30% outside of June to September. A Friday in October versus a Saturday in July at the same venue can be a $3,000 to $5,000 difference.

Look at smaller communities. Port Alberni, Ladysmith, Errington, and Sooke all have solid venues at a fraction of Victoria pricing.

Use the scenery. Beaches, forests, and mountain views don't cost anything. Less to dress up means less spent on decor and rentals. Pick up a few recommended products for the finishing touches.

Book local vendors. Travel fees stack up. A photographer driving from Victoria to Tofino is charging for gas, ferry, and sometimes a hotel night. Browse vendors near your venue.

Trim the guest list. Every person costs $150 to $300 in food, drinks, and seating. Going from 120 to 60 guests saves $9,000 to $18,000. A micro wedding under 30 guests is worth considering too.

Hire newer vendors. Photographers, florists, and coordinators who are still building their portfolios often charge less and do great work.

How Vancouver Island Compares

The Island is cheaper than Vancouver and Whistler but more expensive than the Prairies or Maritimes. The national average is $30,000 to $40,000, and most Island weddings land in the lower half of that range.

Final Thoughts

You don't need Vancouver pricing for a Vancouver Island wedding. Know what matters to you, skip what doesn't, and use local vendors who know the area.
